Monday, September 14th, and Tuesday, September 15th, students in grades 3-10 will be taking a practice math and reading benchmark test. These tests are to gauge their knowledge on their current year material and understanding.
Please encourage your child to do their best on these tests and not get overwhelmed. While we do not expect anyone to understand all the material presented in the tests, we do expect students to work hard.
With the knowledge gained from these tests we will be able to better direct their learning in the classroom.

Due to changes in the FDA regulations, beginning Monday, September 14, 2020, all meals will be free for all students. This will continue until December 31, 2020 or bearing changes to FDA regulations.

JV football plays their first home game this Thursday, August 27th, at 6pm.
Varsity plays this Friday, August 28th, at Coolidge at 7:30pm.

As you plan for school lunches next week, please remember that the students will be eating in the classrooms. Microwaves will not be available to use for students bringing their lunches.

For the 20-21 school year, car rider pickup and drop off will remain the same. Students will be dropped off at the cafeteria. Please only drop students off at the cafeteria and not before 7:30 am.
Once students are dropped off, they will go though the side door and have their temperature taken. They can then get their breakfast and head to first period class.
The only exception to this will be our pre-k and k classes. Their teachers will meet them in the cafeteria where they will eat breakfast and then be escorted to their classroom.
This link will explain this process with the school map and directions
https://youtu.be/teJjazk164k
If you have any questions please call the school.

JISD has installed hand sanitizer dispensers by most doors in the district. Students and staff will be asked to sanitize their hand upon entering the building and each classroom throughout the day.
We will also have sanitizing wipes available for students to clean their desks off before and after use.

Parents:
Please make sure you call the front office with all of your pick up and drop off changes for the 20-21 school year. Mrs. Suggs will be here to accommodate all of your schedule changes for this matter.
Please call the school as early as you can for pick up changes. It is extremely difficult to get messages to teachers right at the end of the day.
In the years past we’ve always used apps or texts to communicate with teachers. This year teachers have a lot going on and we do not want a message to be missed.

Don’t forget we need updated shot recorded for incoming kindergarten and 7th grade students.

Tuesday, August 25th, the Baptist church will be handing out school supplies from 5-8 pm. You will be able to drive by, collect your supplies and leave.
JISD appreciates this service that the church provides each year. Our kids do not go without anything they need because of this community.

Thank you for the continued support of our student athletes!

Herff Jones will be in campus September 11th and 18th for upper class man to view and order class rings. This date is a change from originally planned so please correct your calendars.

As the start of the 20-21 school year approaches, JISD will roll out all the new changes for the school year.
Up first is our school hours. We have extended our school hours from 8:00-3:45. Adding in this extra time allowed us to extend our passing periods giving students more time between classes.
We also ask that no student be dropped off before 7:30 each morning. In the past we could make arrangements for early drop off, but this year our teachers and staff already have enough extra duties to attend.
If you have any questions regarding school hours please call the school.

Seniors 2021!!! I will be hosting a College Application evening on Tuesday, August 18th. I will be available from 3pm- 7pm. We will apply to college and have snacks!! Please let me know if you plan to attend!

FFA/JrFFA
The deadline to order and pay for poultry (broilers, roasters, and turkeys) for CCYF is Monday 8/24 by 5pm.
You will need to go to the extension office to order and pay for your birds.

Please ignore schedules in parent portal until August 14th. We are not done customizing everyone’s schedules.

If you cannot get the register feature to work in parent portal we have to adjust a couple of settings on the admin side. Please email myself (Kendra.gustin@jonesboroisd.net) or Mrs. LeJune (Bethany.lejune@jonesboroisd.net) to get access. We will need a current email address for your account.

10th, 11th and 12th graders interested in taking the TSI college exam to take dual credit need to plan to come test next week. We will start the test at 8:30 am on Tuesday, Aug 11th or noon on Wednesday, Aug 12th. The test takes a couple of hours and costs $10 per test (Reading, Writing, Math). Please call the school with questions or to sign up!!

SUBS!
JISD is always in need of good substitutes. If you are interested in subbing in the 20-21 school year we will have sub training on Monday, August 24th at 10 am. If you cannot meet on this day please call the school to arrange another time. Due to COVID regulation all subs will have to be trained before they are allowed on campus.

As teachers return next week, administration is working hard to determine a plan for Meet the Teacher. We understand that students and teachers need time to "get to know" one another before the school year begins. The tentative plan is to have time the week of August 24th for students to drop off school supplies. More information will be out soon on this plan.

For the beginning of the 20-21 school year students will not be issued lockers. Teachers will utilize classroom sets textbooks. The goal of this procedure is to minimize time in halls. The hope is that once we have a better understanding of COVID in our school, we will be able to issue lockers for this upcoming school year.

Any incoming 9-12 grade students that want to run cross country need to contact Coach Ashby at (254)688-0211 for the practice schedule and information.

Due to changes in TEA COVID-19 directives, JISD has adjusted its calendar again. The new student start date is August 31st. A new calendar will posted soon.

Workouts will resume on Wed (7/22) after the scheduled days off. JH at 8 AM and HS Boys at 6 PM. Thank you.

Juniors:
Class ring viewing is scheduled for August 20th at 8 am at the school. You will then be able to order rings on August 28th at 8 am. (If the date changes we will notify you asap)

HS boys will resume workouts Mon (7/13) at 6 PM.

Dallas Isom....thank you. Thank you for all of your years of dedication to JISD. You have been invaluable to this school and community. I do know that you turned in your retirement letter after the last day teachers are on campus so we could not throw you a party. You would leave campus without a fuss because that's how your are.
Please know that you will be missed dearly. Thank you for teaching our kids and loving them like your own. JISD is better for you having been here.

JISD Parents & Students,
For those asking about yearbooks. I am reposting the information again
We have about 20 yearbooks left to sell, so if you haven’t purchased yours yet PLEASE get yours today! The purchasing of a yearbook basically pays the costs for the yearbook so we need every book sold we can to make sure we are giving the best possible book each year. I have been so proud of my kids and what we gave to our student body last year and we have done so many things this year to make it even better! Link to order online below.

Please click on “Shop my School” and enter “Jonesboro ISD” once our school pops up click on it and it will take you to our page where you can make your purchase.
Thanks for your support of the yearbook!

Today we celebrated an amazing lady, friend and teacher. Cynthia Cate has spent the last 50 years dedicating her life to the education of children. She has been with Jonesboro ISD through good and bad times. Her expertise, love for children, friendship and smile will be missed dearly.
Mrs. Cate, thank you. Thank you for loving our children like your own. You can never be replaced on campus or in our hearts. We pray your retirement brings you many years of joy.

Junior High Cheer Parents,
I will be contacting parents next week to get everything I need for the information packets that were intended to get out a few weeks ago. Be checking dojo and email. If I can’t get ahold of parents that way I will call. I will also be addressing the mascot tryouts as well. Nothing was going to be decided until after graduation as our Admin had a lot on there plate. Thanks you those who are planning to tryout for your patience, you will know soon! All students where given a calendar before spring break, if that could please be turned into the school sometime next week that would be greatly appreciated. If you cannot get in to drop off at the school please let me know and I will make arrangements for a pick up location. Once the next statement is made on March 8th by our governor, information for future fundraisers, camp, parent meeting about payments due/rules and will be sent out. Having those calendars will help me greatly with all the above. Thanks for your patience as we navigate all this.
Kayla Sellers

Varsity Cheer Parents,
Packets where handed out two weeks ago, some have turned them in some have not. If you have not turned in the information paper or your child’s calendar please do so. While I know things are on stand by I want to start having practices as soon as we are allowed and the calendars will really help that out. Once the next statement is made on March 8th by our governor, information for future fundraisers, camp, parent meeting about payments due/rules and future practice dates will be sent out. It’s important to please return the info form and calendar to help me with that when the announcement is made. Thanks for your patience as we navigate all this.

FFA members: I received official confirmation that the State FFA Convention in July has been cancelled.

Just a reminder that yearbooks will be delivered at the beginning of the 20-21 school year.

This is just a reminder that Wednesday, May 20, 2020 will be the last day for meal deliveries. This will be for 2 days. If have have been getting them and do not want this last delivery please let me know. Have a great summer and we can't wait to see everyone next year!

From Chisholm Craftworx!
We have our winners! Hannah W, and Wyatt P. have both won a t-shirt memory pillow. Of all the memories we read these two stuck out and we couldn’t just pick one! Congratulations to the winners! We will be reaching out to you via email with further details!
Thank you for participating,
Chisholm Craftworx

Just a reminder that May 13th is the last day to turn in all work. The school will be open from 8-4 with teachers on campus to answer questions. This will also be the last day students can get into lockers and turn in all books.

If you are a student on work program I need you to email me a short paragraph of approximately how many hours per week you’ve been working this six weeks, if you are still employed, or if you have a new job. Please send it to me at Beth.gann@jonesboroisd.net

Govoner Abbott and other state officials just announced new guidelines for graduation ceremonies. JISD is working on finalizing plans for our graduation. The ceremony will look different and we have many safety requirements to work out.
As of this moment graduation is scheduled for May 22nd at the football field. The time, ceremony format, and number of guests allowed will be decided very soon. Once again, please be patient with us as we think it all through.
We are still filming graduation this Thursday as a backup. While we have the all clear to host graduation at this time, we want to make sure we are still prepared if that order changes.
We are extremely thankful to be be able to plan a graduation for our seniors. To end the year with a little bit of normalcy will warm our hearts.

From Chisholm Craftworx:
We're taking submissions from Jonesboro seniors to win a 2-4 t-shirt pillow. You provide your favorite T-shirts you no longer wear or want to preserve as a memory (2-4) and we turn them into a pillow for you!
To enter the contest you just have to submit your favorite high school memory, it doesn't have to be a school memory, just one from your high school years. You can place your submission at Chisholmcraftworx@gmail.com please put "contest" in the subject.
We will pick ONE winner on May 15th.

From the Hamilton Paper:
We are preparing for the Senior Keepsake Edition of the paper. Even though plans are still in the air with graduation, we want to make sure that the seniors have a very special keepsake. Like last year, this will be a tabloid-size insert in our May 21 issue featuring Hamilton, Evant and Jonesboro graduates. Color space is limited so it is best to reserve a spot ASAP.

Spring pictures have arrived!!! We will have them at the school to hand out starting Monday. If you need them delivered with work on Wednesday please call the school Monday to make those arrangements.

Pre-K and Kindergarten registration packets will be ready Monday, April 27th. You must pick the packets up from school.
For pre-k, once you have a complete packet your name will go on the list. We will put transfer students on a waiting list until June 1st. This will give us time to get all in district students enrolled first. Once that date passes, we will use the names off of our transfer list to fill up the class. We will go in order that we received complete packets.
If your child is already in pre-k for the district you do not have to fill out a new packet for kindergarten.
Please call the school if you have any questions.

This time of year is generally pretty busy for our FFA Chapter. Yesterday we had three members run for District and Area offices. Due to CoVid 19 the election procedures were VERY different and all done remotely.
We would like to co granulated Maddi Brookshire for being elected Bosque River District Officer for the 2020-2021 school year!

JISD Cheer Athletes and Parents,
Varsity cheer will receive packets tomorrow for pick up at the school. Please make sure to fill out information in the packet as well as following the instructions of other things to turn in that where handed out before break.
JH cheer students and parents, next week I will have your child’s packet ready with things to fill out and fundraiser information we will be doing in May.
As of right now my Varsity Cheerleaders are doing a fundraiser until May 14 to help with cheer cost. They along with the junior high will be doing other online fundraisers throughout the summer. I have the link listed below. Because of the current situation online fundraising is all my girls can do so please help them out and buy some “Super Essential” goodies!
https://megadoughshop.com/fundraiser-134.html#!/Fundraiser/134

JISD Junior Cheer Mascot was posted for two weeks before we let out for spring break for a second tryout. I had one young lady sign up. I am putting this out as a last chance if your child is interested. If nothing has been emailed to me by tomorrow that will be the end.

Today, Texas Governor Greg Abbott amended his Executive Order, calling for all schools in the state of Texas to close for the remainder of the 2019-2020 school year. This means JISD will remain closed to the public.
JISD will continue to provide distance learning to all of our students through May 22, 2020. JISD will also continue to serve breakfast and lunches each weekday through this situation.
Please look for an announcement late next week concerning prom and graduation. We expect to receive information and guidance from Mike Morath, Texas Commissioner of Education, next week regarding graduation ceremonies.
Miss you all,
Kendra Gustin
Principal JISD

I am so sorry I did not get Ms. Burts stories in your packet for this week for grades 4th, 5th and 6th. Please do not panic about it! You will have time to make up the work!!!!

CDC now recommends you wear a mask in public where you can’t avoid being near people, like in grocery stores, pharmacies & healthcare settings https://bit.ly/2V8o5Y2. Remember though, your local authorities may have already issued a specific order re: masks. #StayHomeTexas

Parents:
To ensure everyone can keep track with assignments during our time learning at home, I wanted to point out a new feature on Parent Portal. You can now see grades that do not have grades inputted in the grade book. You will NOT receive grade alerts for blank grades. This will help you keep up with assignments at home a little better.
All you have to do is click show all assignments. The screen shots below are from my phone screen. It will look differently on a computer screen but the language is the same.
Please let me know if you need any help.

The virus lives in tiny droplets in the lungs of people w/ COVID-19, even when they don’t show symptoms. We can breathe the same air as anyone within abt. 6 ft. of us. Staying farther apart from people during this time reduces the chance of breathing in the virus. #StayHomeTexas

I will have Yearbook order forms at school for parents/students on Monday that want to pick one up. I will also post it online so all can see the packages available. If you want to order online go to balfour.com and it will allow you to shop our school. If you still would rather do a personal order I will make a box for that at the school drop off and parents can place payments there and I will enter it online for you! Hope that helps!

JISD Parents & Students,
I wanted to give you all an update with spring pictures. I know there have been questions and I am patiently waiting on the answer at this point. As soon as myself or the administration know something we will let everyone know. One way or another things will get resolved.
Second, I have had many questions about the yearbook. My kids and I are working hard and making sure we get everyone the best possible product so yes we are still having a yearbook! We added many things this year for more content, with school being at a halt we are having to rethink those pages but are coming up with great ideas and solutions! We have about 50 yearbooks left to sell, so if you haven’t purchased yours yet PLEASE get yours today! The purchasing of a yearbook basically pays the costs for the yearbook so we need every book sold we can to make sure we are giving the best possible book each year. I have been so proud of my kids and what we gave to our student body last year and we have done so many things this year to see what we can do better and make it happen! I will be making a post next week with new ideas we have for pages and how you as parents and students can help us with that so keep a look out! Have a great weekend and next week!

I just want to remind everyone that as teachers grade their first round of papers to NOT stress over grades in the gradebook. Teachers have to enter a missing or zero grade for alerts to come across parent portal. This is ONLY for documentation purposes. Assignment due dates are flexible. Please stay in touch with the teachers on when you can turn assignments in.
Remember that we are all working with a LOT of grace for each other. This is new to each of us!! As always, if a student is working hard and communicating with their teachers we will do what a child needs to succeed.

Students will be able to get into lockers again this Wednesday, April 8th. Anyone entering the building will be medically screened.

There seems to be a default reminder setting through evite for Prom. I have heard from several students today that they had received this reminder. Parents and athletes: please bring any uniforms/practice gear/equipment to turn in when picking up school work on Wednesday. Thank you.

After trying to coordinate work and delivery of materials we are just going to have students pick up all assignments from the school. We will be here from 8-4 Wednesday.
Sorry for the confusion and the changes. We are working through all of this as much as possible.

JISD Parents,
Listed below are some great ways to get your kids active while at home! Listed below are online resources as well as links to games that can be played outside. Sometimes the best exercise is letting your kids go outside and play unstructured. This keeps them active but allows them to use their own imagination while getting lots of exercise! Exercise/Play first thing in the morning helps to get their brains stimulated which helps for any instruction time you’re doing at home. I hope these links will help you while on this extended break. I will be posting different activities often on via our school Facebook & Dojo that will continue to help keep you littles active!

You can drive around to the car drop off by the cafeteria to pick up the meals. Once we get orders placed for the rest of the week we will adjust delivery times and places.

We will be using Class Dojo to communicate lessons with students and parents. I am slowly sending out access codes to parents. If you do not get an access code you can call the school Monday to receive one. You can also email me at Kendra.gustin@jonesboroisd.net.
Thanks!

I have set up a google voice account for the community to reach me during this time. You can call or text (254) 307-0459. I’ll be able to silence the alerts and calls during non-office hours. Feel free to call or text at any time.
Remote teaching is teaching me all the new tricks to this digital age we live in!

A new need has been brought to my attention to help support our health care workers through this pandemic. While schools are closed their children cannot be left at home alone. This puts added strain on an already stressful situation.
If you are a high school student or a person in a position to help and would like to help babysit children, please call me. I can get you in touch with with the correct people to coordinate this need.

Students and parents:
Teachers and staff are already preparing lessons for next week. Due to the fact that this week was our spring break, we have not had a chance to meet as a faculty to collect lessons and prepare materials. We are meeting throughout the day Monday. Please expect lessons to start coming through Monday afternoon and Tuesday.
We will have digital options as well as print copies. A schedule of times to pick up print copies and locations will be posted. Teachers will also support lessons with videos and other means of communication.
I just wanted to update everyone on a time line of materials and work as this is new to us all.
If at any time you have questions please call the school. We ask that you call to keep the number of visitors to the campus to a minimum. We are all answering emails and texts as well.
Know that we already miss our students. We love hearing their spring break adventures and our hearts ache not being able to see them. Give the kids big hugs from their teachers and tell them we love them!

As the school prepares for remote learning we will provide students with options to complete your assignments.
As a math teacher by a nature, my thoughts go out to the freshman as they have to do their algebra 1 homework by hand.....or they can go to the link below to down load a calculator to use at home. If you cannot download the app please let me know.

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Texas Gov. Greg Abbott ordered schools closed statewide Thursday until at least until April 3 and a ban on dine-in eating and gathering in groups of more than 10 as the state ramps up efforts to battle the coronavirus.
Until the announcement, Abbott had left most of those decisions to local governments.
Abbott's order also will shut down gyms and bars. Business closures take effect at 11:59 p.m. Friday, according to the governor's office.
The governor said his order ensures Texas is following guidance provided by the federal government.
Schools were instructed to develop education plans.
The governor said it is not an order for Texans to shelter in place and does not restrict domestic travel, though he encouraged people to use drive-thru options at restaurants and other businesses to avoid being in large groups.
Texans are still allowed to go in public, go to the grocery store and to work although Abbott encouraged companies to allow workers to work from home if possible.
Government will remain open.
We ask that all JISD Stakeholders to watch JISD Website and FB Page for updates.

JISD Community:
We are currently working out the details of Gov. Abbott’s school closure. I am working with teachers and staff to formulate plans for mobile learning. Please be patient as we line everything out.
Stay safe!

More information regarding STAAR testing was released today. The link is below.

As the school district receives more instruction from the state, we will pass on the information to the community. Please be patient with us as we all navigate through this unprecedented event.

Happy New Year, praying mamas of Jonesboro!
I just wanted to take a minute to point out how incredible God has made our first term of the year. I am so thankful for all of you praying for our community, our school, our staff, and our students. I am also so thankful for the support that is always shown and given.
For this new year and term, I have asked God what is we need to pray for as mountain moving, Satan scaring mamas. His response, unity, cooperation, and peace. Unity for our students, staff, and community to remain strong together as a family. Cooperation (and grace), fore the times of state testing are upon us in this term, and it can cause major stress and frustration for teachers and students alike. Peace for our family unit as a whole. Meaning the community, staff, and students. As mentioned, this is the part of the year when things can become tense and overwhelming.
As the praying mamas of Jonesboro, we can counter all of this with the power of prayer, and by giving it all over to Jesus. These are our babies in this place, our friends, and the community we love. Let’s build them up in Jesus name, praying out all flu and multitudes of other ailments that threaten our babies health. Let’s pray for their teachers who teach them, before we criticize or accuse them. Let’s pray our school into a new year that is so remarkable the only thing people will be able to see is Jesus in us all.
I love you all and am so thrilled to praying together with you all! HAPPY NEW YEAR!
Ramey Barnett

Parents/students with show animals please take a look at the weather for thus week. It was a beautiful weekend but that isn’t going to last. Please make sure pigs have extra straw/shavings to bed down in. If you use a heat lamp please make sure it is secure. Lambs and goats MUST have blankets on. We do not want our animals using energy to keep warm and in the process burn what fat they have put on. Again, remember safety precautions with heat lambs... secure them well so we do not have any barn fires.

The Jonesboro ISD is in full support of the Jonesboro Alumni Association and loves hosting the Jonesboro Alumni Association Meeting annually. The Jonesboro ISD has a confident expectation that this is a one year hiatus and next year, or even later this year, the Jonesboro Alumni Association will band together and once again utilize the Jonesboro ISD facilities for future Jonesboro Alumni Association meetings or other events.
